Cycling is more than just a way to get from point A to B. It's exhilarating exercise, a green transportation choice, and for many, a beloved sport. But whether you're a casual rider or an avid cyclist, one critical element can make or break your biking experience: the seat height.
Why Proper Seat Height Matters
A proper seat height is more than just a matter of comfort. It plays a crucial role in your overall performance, efficiency, and most importantly, your health. (1)

1. Boosting Efficiency and Power
When your bike seat is at the correct height, your legs can extend fully and efficiently during each pedal stroke. This maximizes the power transferred from your legs to the pedals, helping you ride faster and with less effort. If your seat is too low or too high, you'll lose power and fatigue faster.
2. Preventing Injury
An incorrect seat height can lead to various injuries. A seat that's too low can cause knee pain, as your knee stays too bent throughout the pedal stroke, putting undue stress on it. Conversely, a seat that's too high can lead to hip and lower back pain, as you might rock your hips side to side to reach the pedals.
3. Enhancing Comfort
Cycling should be a joy, not a pain. A proper seat height ensures that you ride in a more comfortable position, reducing saddle sores and general discomfort. It can also prevent numbness and circulation issues that arise from an improper fit.
Finding the Right Seat Height
There are many different methods to get your seat height adjusted and the more precise the method the closer a person can get to their true seat height.
Option 1: Hip Height:
If you are a casual rider, a quick way to get close to a proper seat height is to find your greater trochanter which is your side hip bone. Match your side hip bone to be level with the seat when standing next to your bike.
This is the most imprecise method, but if you are a casual rider or just need a quick estimate before a ride this will do.
Option 2: Lemond Method:
Measure Your Inseam: Stand with your feet about 15-20 cm apart. Measure the distance from the floor to your groin.
Calculate Your Seat Height: Multiply your inseam length by 0.883. This gives you a rough estimate of the seat height from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat.
The Lemond method is more precise than a simple hip height measurement and in my experience with fitting people who use the Lemond method may only be 1-2 cm away from their final bike fit position during a PT bike fit.
Option 3: Bike Shop Fit:
Local bike shops will use different computers and analog systems to complete a bike which from my experience works very well. Bike shop fits are more affordable and easier to access. If you are having trouble with your bike fit this might be the first place to turn to dial in your bike fit.
